Clamping and surge — what the ratings mean for the board
The SMBJ7.5A-13: The 46.5 A peak pulse current at that waveform tells you the device can absorb a substantial transient without failing short — useful for clamping surges on a 7.5 V rail where the normal operating voltage sits below the 8.33 V minimum breakdown. The reverse standoff voltage is 7.5 V, meaning the TVS draws negligible leakage below that level. Clamping maxes out at 12.9 V at the rated Ipp — so a transient that would otherwise push the rail above 13 V gets clipped.
