12V rail clamp in a DO-214AA footprint
The SMBJ12A-13: Its 12V reverse standoff voltage means the device stays off the line at normal operating levels, only conducting when the line exceeds 13.3V breakdown minimum. At that point it clamps the surge to 19.9V maximum, shunting up to 30.2A of peak pulse current in the 10/1000µs waveform. For a 12V bus in a 85°C enclosure, budget roughly 70% of the 600W rating.
Package and board integration
The SMB package has a larger copper pad area than the smaller SMA sibling, which helps spread heat from repetitive pulse events. The supplier device package is SMB. Power line protection is not provided — this is a signal or low-voltage rail protector, not a mains surge suppressor.
