|---|---|---|
| Supply voltage | The whole difference: rails inside 60V or 80V take the cheaper grade; rails above their class need the 100V part. | - |
| Memory & Peripherals | The complementary grades track: TIP145/TIP146 carry the PNP side of the 140/141. | - |
| Case | TO-247 | TO-247 (formerly TO-218) |
| Compatibility Level | Functional Equivalent | - |
| Component Category | - | Darlington Power Transistors |
| Core & Architecture | The lower-voltage members of the same row: 60V and 80V VCEO against the 100V of the 142/147 - identical current, gain and body. | - |
| Firmware Notes | Grade substitution reads the rail, not the drawer: check supply plus inductive spikes against the voltage class before accepting the cheaper member. | - |
| Hardware Notes | Same TO-247 outline and pinning. | - |

| Market Reality | - | The TIP142 NPN and TIP147 PNP are the 10A complementary Darlingtons of audio output stages, solenoid and relay drivers, and the lamp and motor outputs of industrial gear: 100V, 10A, 125W in the TO-247 body, with a current gain of 1000 that turns a milliampere of base current into amperes at the load. That gain is the entire design contract - circuits built around it deliver almost no drive, which is why the classic repair failure happens when a well-meaning substitution fits a genuine, expensive, "better" power transistor with gain 100 and the output stage quietly starves. Since the old TO-218 body was discontinued in 2012, TO-247 is the only current home, including the onsemi MJH6284/MJH6287 pair. |
