Specification differences for L293D, L293 / L293B
Parameter
Supply voltage-Same rails; the missing protection shows up as inductive kick reaching the die.
Memory & Peripherals-The letter is functional: L293D into a plain L293 socket is protection gained for free; the reverse direction removes the clamps the board was designed to rely on.
CaseDIP-16 / SOIC-16DIP-16
Compatibility Level-Pin-to-Pin (Minor Clock/Init Tuning)
Component CategoryMotor Drivers (Dual H-Bridge)-
Core & Architecture-The same bridge architecture without the D: identical drive pins and currents, no internal flyback diodes - protection that the L293D hides inside the package.
Firmware Notes-One rule covers the family history: moving down from the D means adding external diodes across every output before the first motor is connected - not after the first failure.
Hardware Notes-Same DIP-16 footprint across the letter variants.

Market RealityThe L293D is the motor and stepper driver of a million robotics courses and small CNC builds: four half-bridges (two full bridges), 600mA per channel with 1.2A peaks, and - the reason for the D - internal flyback diodes that the plain L293 leaves to the board. Its drop-in upgrade is the TI SN754410 at one amp pin for pin, and its famous neighbor is the L298N module: twice the current in a MultiWatt body, no internal diodes, and a logic supply that tolerates only 4.5-7V where the L293D accepts up to 36V. The substitution arithmetic between the two looks like a current question and is actually a supply-design question - the classic 12V-into-the-logic-pin death.-
