The Maxim Integrated MAX690RESA+ is a single-channel voltage supervisor with battery backup switching, designed to hold a microprocessor in reset until the supply rail is stable and to automatically switch to a backup battery if the main supply drops out. It monitors one voltage with a threshold of 2.625 V, asserts a reset output (active-low, push-pull/totem-pole) for a minimum of 140 ms after the supply rises above threshold, and then releases the processor to run. The industrial temperature range (-40°C to 85°C) suits it for motor drives, outdoor telecom gear, and factory automation panels where the ambient temperature can swing. 140 ms reset timeout — why that number matters
The reset timeout of 140 ms minimum gives the power supply time to settle and the crystal oscillator time to start up before the processor begins executing code.
Active-low reset with push-pull output
The reset output is active-low and push-pull (totem-pole), meaning it drives the reset line low during the timeout period and then releases it high without needing an external pull-up resistor. That simplifies the BOM — no extra resistor to the supply rail. The push-pull stage can sink and source enough current to drive the reset input of most logic families directly. If your processor expects an active-high reset, you would need an inverter; otherwise this is a direct connect.
