Your board is specced for an industrial Ethernet gateway or an AI server leaf switch, and you need to select a 100BASE-TX or 1000BASE-T Ethernet PHY. The three parts your hardware team is evaluating are the TI DP83822IFRHBT, the Microchip KSZ8794CLXIC, and the Realtek RTL8201F. All three are in our catalog. All three will pass the IEEE 802.3 compliance test. But they are not interchangeable at the BOM level — and choosing the wrong one will cost you 6 to 12 weeks of re-spin time and a new qualification cycle.

TI DP83822IFRHBT is a Robust Industrial 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHY in a 4 mm × 4 mm QFN package. It supports MII and RMII interfaces, features ±25 kV HBM ESD protection on the cable-side pins, and is rated for operation from -40°C to +125°C junction temperature. The DP83822 is the PHY that TI specifically positions for industrial automation, factory Ethernet switches, and AI server management network ports.

Microchip KSZ8794CLXIC is a 4-port 10/100 Mbps switch plus PHY combo in a TQFP package. It integrates four full-MDI PHY ports with a managed switch fabric, supporting SNMP management, VLAN tagging, and QoS queue configuration. The KSZ8794 is the choice when you need a multi-port Ethernet switch node without the complexity of an external switch IC and separate PHYs.

Realtek RTL8201F is a single-port 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHY in an SOP-16 package. It is the commodity choice — widely cloned, available from multiple distributors in large volume, and priced aggressively. The RTL8201F is suitable for high-volume consumer and commercial equipment where BOM cost is the primary constraint and the operating environment is benign.

Thermal Performance: Where the DP83822 Pulls Ahead

Industrial environments and AI server racks share one common enemy: heat. An Ethernet PHY mounted in a sealed industrial enclosure or adjacent to a GPU module will see ambient temperatures that can spike to +85°C or higher during peak compute loads.

The TI DP83822IFRHBT is rated for junction temperatures up to +150°C with a thermal derating curve that maintains the 100BASE-TX link at full line rate up to +125°C ambient. The part uses a thermal pad on the QFN package that must be properly soldered to the board thermal land for the rated thermal performance.

The Microchip KSZ8794CLXIC is rated to +125°C junction, but the integrated switch fabric generates additional self-heating. At maximum traffic load, the KSZ8794 junction temperature can exceed +105°C in a +85°C ambient environment without forced air.

The Realtek RTL8201F is rated to +125°C but is not characterized for the thermal transients typical of industrial environments. The SOP-16 package has a thermal resistance of approximately 100°C/W junction-to-ambient in still air. In a +70°C ambient environment, the RTL8201F will run near its maximum rated junction temperature even at idle.

Interface Flexibility: MII vs RMII vs Integrated Switch

The DP83822 supports both MII and RMII clock modes, allowing it to connect to MACs that output either reference clock scheme. This flexibility is important for AI server designs where the MAC may be in an FPGA or an ASIC.

The KSZ8794 integrates a managed 4-port switch fabric that presents a single MII/RMII interface to the host MAC while managing the four internal PHY ports independently. It requires SNMP or register-based switch management software to configure VLANs, port mirroring, and rate limiting.

The RTL8201F supports only MII interface, which limits its compatibility with MACs that only expose RMII. Most modern AI server MACs use RGMII rather than MII, requiring an intermediate bridge.
