50 mV hysteresis and half-duplex — what they mean on the bus
The 50 mV receiver hysteresis gives the SN75176BD a clean switching threshold on long cable runs where common-mode noise can blur the differential signal. In a half-duplex topology, the driver and receiver share the same pair of wires, so the microcontroller must manage the driver enable pin — typically tied to a UART's DE signal — to avoid bus contention. The 5V supply rail is standard for legacy RS-485 networks; if your system uses 3.3V logic, you will need level translation or a different transceiver.
