905nm IR emitter, side-view can
The ELM-4003 is an infrared LED from the ELM-4000 series, emitting at 905 nm — a wavelength commonly paired with silicon photodiodes for proximity sensing, optical encoders, or short-range lidar. The side-view orientation means the light exits perpendicular to the PCB plane, so the mechanical fit depends on which edge of the board the part sits against.
Through-hole radial — field-swappable
Through-hole radial package: the leads come out the bottom and the body stands upright. No hot-air station needed — a soldering iron and solder wick is enough to swap it on site. The side-view can is keyed by the flat on the lens barrel; orientation is obvious once you see the emission window, so a field swap is low-risk even without a bench.
Obsolete — sourced through surplus
TE Connectivity Measurement Specialties has marked the ELM-4003 as obsolete. No pin-compatible direct replacement is documented, so a BOM revision may be needed if stock runs dry.
