Offline flyback switch for compact AC/DC supplies
The STMicroelectronics VIPER22ADIP-E is a monolithic offline flyback switcher from the VIPER™ series, integrating a 730 V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET with a current-mode PWM controller in an 8-DIP through-hole package. It delivers up to 12 W of isolated output power from a universal AC input, switching at a fixed 60 kHz. The part includes on-chip fault protection — current limiting, over-temperature, and over-voltage — reducing external component count for compact power supplies in industrial, appliance, and auxiliary rail applications.
730 V breakdown — headroom for universal input
The 730 V breakdown voltage on the internal MOSFET provides margin for universal AC input designs. The 60 kHz fixed switching frequency keeps the transformer small.
12 W output with integrated protection
Rated for 12 W continuous output in a flyback topology, the VIPER22ADIP-E suits auxiliary supplies for motor drives, smart meters, and home appliances. The current-mode control loop gives cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and the over-temperature shutdown protects the junction up to 150 °C — useful for enclosed power supplies with limited airflow. Over-voltage protection on the Vcc pin prevents runaway if the feedback loop opens.
Through-hole DIP for prototyping and low-volume production
The 8-DIP (0.300" body) through-hole package is a practical choice for bench prototypes, small-batch builds, and designs where wave-solder is the primary assembly process. It also simplifies rework and field repair compared to surface-mount alternatives. The supply voltage range of 8 V to 38 V on Vcc gives flexibility for both self-supplied and externally biased configurations.
For BOM freeze planning, this is a stable line item — no urgency to qualify a second source unless dual-sourcing policy requires one.
