5000Vrms isolation — the safety barrier on the BOM
The Renesas PS9513L2-V-AX is a single-channel high-speed optocoupler in an 8-SMD gull wing package, rated for 5000Vrms isolation between input and output. That isolation rating places it in the reinforced-insulation class for industrial power supplies, motor drives, and PLC I/O modules where a galvanic barrier is required for operator safety or ground-loop break. The DC input side accepts a forward voltage of 1.65V typical at up to 25mA forward current, and the open collector output sinks up to 15mA per channel. With a supply voltage range of 4.5V to 20V, it can interface directly with 5V logic or 12V/24V industrial rails without a level shifter.
1Mbps data rate — mid-speed isolation for fieldbus and sensor links
At 1Mbps, this optocoupler is sized for RS-485, CAN, or I2C isolation where the bus runs at a few hundred kHz to 1 MHz. The propagation delay is asymmetric — 750ns max for low-to-high, 500ns max for high-to-low — so timing margin matters if you are clocking a synchronous interface near the rate limit. The 15kV/µs minimum common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) means it will hold its state through fast switching edges from a motor-drive IGBT or a flyback converter, which is the real-world failure mode that cheaper optocouplers miss.
No last-time-buy notice has been issued, and there is no successor part to plan for.
Open collector output — pull-up resistor required
The open collector output means the part sinks current to ground when on, and floats when off. You must add an external pull-up resistor to the supply rail you want the output logic level at — typically 5V or 3.3V. The 15mA sink rating is generous for most logic families, but the pull-up value sets the rise time and thus the effective data rate. At 1Mbps with a 5V rail, a 1kΩ pull-up gives a 15ns time constant, which is fine; a 10kΩ pull-up will slow the edge and may limit the rate to a few hundred kHz.
Package and footprint — 8-SMD gull wing, tube delivery
The package is an 8-SMD gull wing (8-SMD, Gull Wing per the spec), surface mount. The gull wing leads are coplanar and the package is MSL 1 typically for this class of optocoupler — no bake required before reflow as long as the moisture barrier bag is intact.
