Single-channel optocoupler with 2500Vrms isolation
The PS2801C-1-P-A from Renesas is a single-channel DC-input optocoupler with a phototransistor output, rated for 2500Vrms isolation between input and output.
CTR range and drive current
The current transfer ratio is specified at 150% minimum and 300% maximum when the LED forward current is 5mA. This CTR band tells you the output transistor will sink at least 7.5mA of collector current with 5mA LED drive, which is enough to pull a logic input low or drive a small relay coil through a resistor. The typical forward voltage of the LED is 1.2V, and the maximum DC forward current is 30mA.
Output ratings and switching speed
The output transistor can handle up to 80V collector-emitter voltage and 30mA continuous current. Saturation voltage is 300mV maximum at the rated current, which keeps power dissipation low. Switching is moderate: typical rise time is 5µs, fall time 7µs, and turn-on/turn-off times are 10µs and 7µs respectively. That's fine for 50/60Hz line-frequency isolation or slow digital signals, but not for high-speed data links.
