5000Vrms isolation in a 4-SMD gull wing — what that buys you
The Renesas PS2561FL-1Y-K-A is a single-channel, DC-input transistor-output optocoupler rated for 5000Vrms isolation between primary and secondary sides. That isolation voltage puts it in the reinforced-insulation tier for industrial drives, motor controls, and AC mains monitoring — enough margin for a 400V bus with double the safety standard. The 4-SMD gull-wing package keeps the creepage path long enough to sustain that rating across the board's lifetime, and the surface-mount footprint suits automated assembly lines without a through-hole step. CTR is spec'd at 300% minimum, 600% maximum at a forward current of 5mA. That's a wide but well-defined gain window: at 5mA input, the output transistor can sink anywhere from 15mA to 30mA into a pull-up or logic gate. Design the input resistor for 5mA forward current, and you get a guaranteed logic-level swing at the output without overdriving the LED. The 50mA absolute maximum per channel covers direct drive to a small relay or a low-side switch.
Temperature range and switching speed
Operating temperature spans -55°C to 110°C, so this part is at home in outdoor telecom cabinets, under-hood automotive electronics, and factory-floor PLCs that see thermal cycling. The rise and fall times are 5µs and 7µs typical — fast enough for 10 kHz PWM isolation or serial data at 115.2 kbps, but not for high-speed comms like CAN or SPI. For those, you'd step up to a digital isolator or a high-speed optocoupler.
