What the 5 kVrms isolation rating means for your design
The PS2561DL-1Y-F3-A is a single-channel phototransistor optocoupler from Renesas's NEPOC series, providing 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between a DC input and a transistor output. That 5 kV rating is the reinforced-isolation level you need when the primary and secondary circuits must survive a 4 kV surge without breakdown — think motor-drive IGBT gate drives, industrial PSU feedback loops, or any board where the low-voltage control side must be protected from a high-voltage bus fault. The 4-SMD Gull Wing package (supplier device package 4-SMD) is a standard surface-mount footprint for optocouplers, with the Gull Wing leads providing the creepage distance that supports the 5 kV isolation claim.
Current transfer ratio and drive margin
The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified at 50% minimum and 400% maximum, both measured at a forward current of 5 mA. This wide bin means the same part number covers a broad range of gain — at 5 mA in, the output transistor can sink anywhere from 2.5 mA to 20 mA. For a logic-level input that only guarantees 2 mA drive, the 50% floor ensures the output still switches cleanly; the 400% ceiling means you don't need to overdrive the LED to get the output current you need. The output transistor is rated for 50 mA continuous collector current and a maximum collector-emitter voltage of 80 V, with a saturation voltage of 300 mV at the rated current.
Switching speed and temperature range
This puts the usable switching frequency in the low tens of kilohertz — fine for 50/60 Hz mains zero-cross detection, DC bus voltage sensing, or slow digital isolation, but not for high-speed data links like CAN or Ethernet. The 3 µs rise time means the output takes about 3 µs to go from 10% to 90% of its final value; a downstream microcontroller input with a 1 µs digital filter will see the edge cleanly. The operating temperature range spans -55°C to 110°C. The -55°C low end covers cold-soak conditions in outdoor telecom cabinets or avionics; the 110°C upper limit is above the 105°C typical for industrial-grade parts, giving headroom in a warm enclosure near a heatsink or power supply.
