Package and mounting
The Hitachi HD6445CP4 is a CRT character display controller — it generates the timing and raster-scan signals needed to drive a monochrome or colour CRT monitor for character-based text output. Think of it as the brains behind a dumb terminal or an industrial panel that shows alphanumeric readouts on a CRT. It handles the horizontal and vertical sync generation, character row addressing, and cursor control, offloading that work from the main CPU.
For a part of this vintage (CRT display controllers are not a high-volume commodity anymore), active status is a solid signal that Hitachi (now Renesas) still supports the line.
Bulk packaging — the repair bench favourite
The package itself is a DIP footprint (the CP suffix in the order code), through-hole, which makes hand-replacement straightforward.
