Dual-core architecture for real-time and application processing
The NXP MIMXRT1165XVM5A is a 32-bit dual-core microcontroller from the i.MX RT series, pairing an ARM Cortex-M7 core running at 500 MHz with a Cortex-M4 core at 240 MHz. This asymmetric split lets the M7 handle the main application stack and signal processing while the M4 manages deterministic real-time control loops, motor commutation, or sensor fusion — no external companion MCU needed. The part executes from external program memory, which keeps the BOM flexible on Flash density but means the designer must budget for a parallel NOR or HyperFlash device and the associated PCB routing.
On-chip connectivity includes CANbus, Ethernet, USB OTG, I²C, SPI, SAI, SPDIF, and MMC/SD/SDIO — enough to serve as the central gateway in an HMI panel or a multi-protocol industrial bridge without external PHYs or transceivers beyond the physical layer. The data converters (2x12-bit ADC, 1x12-bit DAC) cover analog feedback from current shunts or thermocouple inputs.
