1.5 kW clamping at 170 V rail — what the ratings mean
The SMCJ170A-13: The 170 V reverse standoff voltage means it sits across a 170 V DC rail without conducting in normal operation; the breakdown triggers at 189 V minimum, giving a 19 V guard band before the TVS starts shunting energy.
Single-channel unidirectional — one line, one direction
This is a single-channel unidirectional Zener TVS — it protects one signal or power rail against positive overvoltage transients only. For bidirectional or AC-line protection, a different part in the SMCJ family would be needed.
DO-214AB SMC — standard footprint for 1.5 kW TVS
Housed in the DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package, the SMCJ170A-13 uses the same copper-pad footprint as other 1.5 kW TVS diodes in this package.
General-purpose transient suppression
Labelled for general-purpose applications, the SMCJ170A-13 is suited for DC power bus clamping, I/O protection, and telecom line guarding where the operating voltage does not exceed 170 V. No power-line protection rating — it is not intended for AC mains use.
