What the 600W peak pulse rating means on the bench
The SMBJ7.0CA-13-F: That 600W figure is the maximum energy the die can absorb in a single surge event before the junction temperature exceeds the safe operating area — it is not a continuous power rating. At the 50A peak pulse current (Ipp) the clamping voltage hits 12V max, which means a 7V nominal rail gets held to 12V during a transient. The reverse standoff voltage of 7V is the DC bias the part can sit on all day without conducting; the breakdown starts at 7.78V min, so there is a 0.78V window before the diode begins to avalanche.

The SMB footprint is a standard JEDEC outline; the copper pad area on the PCB sets the thermal impedance for surge events, so keep the pad as large as the board space allows. The wide range means the clamping voltage and leakage current shift with temperature — at 150°C the leakage rises, but the part still clamps within the rated limits.
