Active Zener TVS in the SMBJ family
The SMBJ6.0A-13-F: It clamps a 6V nominal rail — reverse standoff voltage is 6V — and triggers breakdown at 6.67V minimum, holding the clamp at 10.3V maximum while shunting 58.3A peak pulse current.
Clamp voltage and pulse current — the protection envelope
At the 10.3V clamping ceiling, the TVS holds the protected node below the abs-max rating of most 5V-logic ICs and 6V-rated sensors, giving a guard band of several volts. The 58.3A peak pulse current rating at the same waveform means the diode can absorb a direct lightning-induced surge on a field cable without the energy spilling into the downstream circuitry. The single unidirectional channel handles positive transients only — for bipolar lines, a bidirectional TVS or back-to-back pair is needed.
DO-214AA SMB — board-fit and rework considerations
Housed in the DO-214AA (SMB) surface-mount package, the SMBJ6.0A-13-F occupies a standard 5.4 mm × 3.6 mm footprint with a gull-wing lead form. For rework, a standard hot-air profile at 260°C peak works; the package is MSL 1 (no moisture bake required before reflow, typical for this class).
