TVS clamping and breakdown parametrics
The SMBJ28A-13-F is a 600W peak-pulse Zener TVS diode from Diodes Incorporated's SMBJ series, designed to clamp transients on general-purpose DC rails. Its 28V reverse standoff voltage means the device draws negligible leakage below that rail level; once the line exceeds 31.1V (minimum breakdown), the avalanche junction conducts and clamps the surge to 45.4V maximum at the rated 13.2A peak pulse current (10/1000µs waveform). The single unidirectional channel handles one polarity — the cathode band on the DO-214AA package marks the ground side. For bidirectional clamping on AC or bipolar rails, two devices back-to-back or a dedicated bidirectional TVS is needed.
Housed in the DO-214AA (SMB) surface-mount package, the part's footprint is shared across the SMBJ family — same pad layout for 5.0V through 188V standoff versions, so a single PCB land pattern covers the whole voltage range. The junction operates from -55°C to 150°C, covering industrial and automotive under-hood ambient without derating the peak pulse power at elevated temperature. No power line protection feature is claimed — this is a signal-rail or low-power DC bus clamp, not a mains-side suppressor. The tape-and-reel packaging (Cut Tape also available) suits automated pick-and-place for volume assembly.
No pin-compatible second-source or successor is listed — the SMBJ series is the manufacturer's own broad offering, and this voltage variant is the primary order code for 28V unidirectional clamping in the DO-214AA package.
