400W bidirectional TVS in a standard SMA footprint
The SMAJ16CA-13 is a 400W bidirectional transient voltage suppressor from Diodes Incorporated, packaged in the industry-standard DO-214AC (SMA) surface-mount package. The bidirectional configuration means a single device protects both polarities, simplifying BOM consolidation on AC or bipolar DC rails.
Breakdown and clamping — where the protection window sits
The minimum breakdown voltage is 17.8V, so the device starts conducting (avalanche) above that threshold. For a 16V-rated downstream component (e.g. a 16V ceramic capacitor), the 26V clamp exceeds its voltage rating — the designer must verify the capacitor's surge withstand or use a higher-voltage part.
Active production — sourcing and compliance
The device carries no power line protection rating (it is not designed for continuous overvoltage clamping on mains), and it is a general-purpose TVS — not qualified to AEC-Q101 automotive grade. For automotive applications, check the Diodes Inc SMAJ-Q series or equivalent AEC-Q101-listed parts. RoHS and REACH compliance documentation is available from Diodes Incorporated upon request.
