Product details

100 µH shielded drum core — where the saturation current governs the DC bias point

The Coilcraft LPS6225-104MRC is a 100 µH shielded drum core inductor in the 2424 (6060 Metric) SMD package, part of the LPS6225 series. The drum core construction wraps the winding around a ferrite bobbin, packing the inductance into a 6.00 mm square footprint while the ferrite sleeve contains the magnetic flux — radiated EMI stays off adjacent traces and components. Rated at 640 mA with a saturation current of 480 mA, the usable DC bias is limited by the core, not the winding temperature. The 610 mOhm max DCR produces 250 mW of I²R loss at the rated current — the shielded package dissipates that into the board copper without exceeding the 85°C ambient ceiling.

The self-resonant frequency is 7.7 MHz, so the inductor behaves as a pure inductance well below that point; above it the parasitic capacitance dominates and the impedance rolls off. Inductance is tested at 100 kHz.

Frequently asked questions

What is the saturation current and why does it matter for this inductor?

The saturation current (Isat) is 480 mA, which is lower than the 640 mA thermal current rating. This means the usable DC bias is capped by the core — once the current exceeds 480 mA the inductance drops sharply, and the circuit (a buck converter output filter or EMI choke, for example) loses its filtering action. Design the DC bias margin below 480 mA, not 640 mA.
