Clamping voltage and pulse current — the real protection envelope
The 1.5SMBJ14CA: Its 14 V reverse standoff voltage means the protected rail stays below the clamping threshold during normal operation; the breakdown voltage starts at 15.6 V min, and the maximum clamping voltage at the peak pulse current is 23.2 V. At that clamping voltage the device handles 64.7 A of peak pulse current — the energy is absorbed by the silicon junction, not shunted to ground through an external capacitor. For a 24 V nominal automotive bus, the 14 V standoff is too low; this part is sized for 12 V or 14 V rails where the transient must be clamped before it reaches downstream electronics.
The DO-214AA (SMB) package is a standard surface-mount footprint shared across many TVS families. The bidirectional construction clamps both polarities with a single device, saving board space compared to two unidirectional diodes in anti-series.
