What the 3 MHz switching buys you
Switching at 3 MHz lets the designer use a 1 µH or smaller inductor and 10 µF ceramic output capacitors — the whole converter fits in a few mm² of board area. The trade-off is switching losses that cap the efficiency at moderate loads; above 300 mA the thermal rise in the 9-WLP package becomes the limiting factor for continuous operation. Synchronous rectification is integrated, so there is no external Schottky diode to place. The internal low-side FET and high-side synchronous FET handle the full 700 mA output with the dead-time control built into the controller.
Package reality — 9-WLP rework and layout
The 9-WLP (1.26 x 1.26 mm) is a wafer-level package with solder balls on a 0.4 mm pitch. No underfill is required for typical portable applications, but the board must have a solder-mask-defined pad with a 0.25 mm opening per ball. Rework needs a hot-air nozzle that matches the 1.26 mm body — a standard 10 mm nozzle will overshoot and reflow adjacent parts.
The fixed 4.25 V output is suited for powering a white LED backlight or a sensor bias rail that needs better than 5% accuracy.
