1A LDO with 0.2V dropout — the thermal constraint at full load
The MAX8516EUB+T is a single-output positive LDO from Analog Devices, rated for 1A continuous output current. At that full load, the maximum dropout voltage is 0.2V — meaning the input rail must stay within 0.2V of the programmed output to maintain regulation. For a 3.3V output, the input needs at least 3.5V, and the 3.6V absolute maximum input leaves only 0.1V of headroom margin at the top end. This tight window matters when sourcing from a 3.3V rail that sags under transient load. The 10-uMAX-EP package with exposed pad pulls heat into the PCB copper plane — without a proper thermal land on the board, the junction temperature rise from 1A dropout dissipation (0.2V × 1A = 200 mW) will push the die above the 85°C operating limit in a warm enclosure.
Industrial temp grade and protection set
The protection block includes over-temperature shutdown, short-circuit current limiting, soft-start to limit inrush, and under-voltage lockout (UVLO) that holds the output off until the input rail crosses the threshold. Quiescent current is 320 µA typical — not a micropower LDO for always-on battery applications, but acceptable for a 1A regulator in a system where the load current dominates the power budget. The Enable pin lets a GPIO or supervisor pull the output to zero and drop Iq to near-zero in standby.
