16-bit I/O with I²C/SMBus and interrupt
Sixteen push-pull I/O lines, each capable of sourcing 31 mA or sinking 43 mA, drive LEDs, relays, or logic inputs directly without external buffers. The I²C/SMBus interface runs at 400 kHz (Fast Mode), compatible with most MCU I²C peripherals. The bus address is set by three hardware pins, allowing up to eight devices on the same bus for a total of 128 I/O lines. A dedicated interrupt output (IRQ) asserts when any input changes state, eliminating the need for the host to poll the port. In battery-powered designs, this lets the MCU sleep until a button press or sensor edge wakes it, reducing average current draw.
Power-on reset and default state
The POR (Power-On Reset) feature ensures all I/O pins power up as inputs in a high-impedance state. This prevents uncontrolled output glitches during supply ramp — critical when the expander shares a rail with a watchdog or safety-critical actuator.
Supplied in tube packaging — 24-SOIC tubes typically hold 30–40 units per tube. For reel or tape-and-reel requirements, confirm the alternate order code (MAX7311AWG+T) with your sourcing contact.
