What is the MAX7221EWG+ and what does it drive?
The MAX7221EWG+ is an LED display driver from Analog Devices that controls up to eight 7-segment digits with decimal points, or 64 individual LEDs, through a 4-wire serial interface. It integrates a BCD code-B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and a 150 µA shutdown mode — reducing the BOM count for numeric or alphanumeric display panels.
Supply voltage and current budget
Operating from 4 V to 5.5 V, it draws up to 330 mA supply current when all segments are lit — the 5 V rail must be sized to deliver this peak without droop, especially if the display is multiplexed at full brightness. The 330 mA figure is the worst-case supply current; actual draw depends on segment current set by an external resistor and the number of digits scanned. A 5 V supply with 500 mA headroom covers the driver plus the LED forward current.
Package and board-fit
Housed in a 24-SOIC (0.295", 7.50 mm width) surface-mount package, the MAX7221EWG+ occupies a standard SOIC footprint with 1.27 mm pitch — no fine-pitch routing challenges. The wide-body SOIC allows adequate trace escape under the part for the 4-wire serial bus and segment outputs. A 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor close to the supply pin is recommended to handle the 330 mA transient when the display updates.
Because it is an active, current-generation part, it is available through authorized distribution channels and can be quoted to order against BOM quantities without last-time-buy risk.
