What this LED driver does and where it fits
The MAX6968AUE+ is an 8-output linear LED driver with a shift register interface, rated for 55 mA per channel. It is designed for lighting and signage applications where multiple LEDs need independent on/off control from a serial data stream.
Output current and thermal envelope
Each of the eight outputs sinks up to 55 mA continuously, limited by the package's thermal dissipation. The 16-TSSOP with exposed pad (16-TSSOP-EP) pulls heat into the PCB ground plane, so the actual per-channel current in a dense layout may need derating depending on ambient temperature and how many channels are on at once. The operating temperature range spans -40°C to +125°C, covering industrial and automotive cabin environments. At the high end, the silicon junction temperature stays within limits as long as the exposed pad is soldered to a reasonable copper area.
Supply rails and control interface
The shift register topology means the LED on/off states are loaded serially and latched — useful when the host MCU has limited GPIO but a spare SPI or bit-banged port. The internal switches are integrated, so no external driver transistors are needed for the LED cathodes. Each output is a current sink; the LED anode connects to a positive supply through a current-setting resistor.
The pad also serves as the ground return for the output sinks.
