Through-hole LDO with dual-mode output
The MAX603CPA+: The output is configurable as adjustable from 1.25 V up to 11 V, or fixed at 5 V — the datasheet's pin-strapping option selects the mode without external resistor dividers for the fixed case. Housed in an 8-pin DIP (0.300" body width, 7.62 mm pitch), this through-hole package suits prototyping boards, socketed test fixtures, or legacy designs where a surface-mount reflow is not an option. The tube packaging keeps the leads aligned and protected during storage.
Dropout, quiescent draw, and protection
Maximum dropout voltage is 0.55 V at the full 500 mA load — the input rail must stay at least 0.55 V above the output voltage across the load range to maintain regulation. For a 5 V fixed output, the input needs at least 5.55 V; for an adjustable output set to 3.3 V, the input must be above 3.85 V. Quiescent current is 35 µA typical — low enough for always-on rails in battery-powered instruments where the regulator's own draw matters. The Enable control feature lets a logic signal shut down the output entirely, dropping the supply current further. On-chip protection covers over-current, over-temperature, and reverse polarity — the regulator survives a reversed input connection without damage, a useful safeguard during bench testing or field wiring.
The 8-PDIP package has a standard 0.100-inch lead spacing and 0.300-inch row spacing, fitting a wide range of through-hole sockets and breadboards. The copper leadframe dissipates heat into the PCB traces; for loads above 300 mA, a short run of wide copper on the output pin helps keep the junction temperature within limits.
