What this controller does and where it fits
The MAX5934AEEE+ is a single-channel hot swap controller from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) designed to manage the inrush current and protect the downstream load when a board or module is plugged into a live backplane. It operates over a 9V to 80V supply range, making it suitable for 12V, 24V, and 48V telecom and industrial systems. The controller does not integrate the pass FET internally — it drives an external N-channel MOSFET, which lets you scale the current rating to match the load. The 1.4 mA supply current is the controller's own draw; the pass element's dissipation is external.
Programmable protection — what each feature controls
The controller exposes six programmable functions: UVLO threshold and hysteresis, slew rate (output ramp time), current limit, fault timeout, and the choice between auto-retry and latched fault on overcurrent. UVLO lets you set the undervoltage lockout so the controller stays off until the input rail is stable — critical for systems that sequence multiple supplies. The slew-rate pin sets how fast the external FET turns on, which directly controls the inrush current into bulk capacitance on the load side. Current limit and fault timeout together define the circuit breaker response: a sustained overcurrent above the limit trips the timer, and the controller either retries automatically or latches off depending on the configuration.
Package and environment
Housed in a 16-pin SSOP (0.154" body width, 3.90 mm) and also specified as the supplier device package 16-QSOP, the part is surface-mount and fits standard narrow-SSOP footprints. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C covers industrial, telecom, and base-station environments where the backplane may see temperature swings. ROHS3 compliant.
