Hot swap controller for -48V backplane insertion
The MAX5900NNEUT+T is a single-channel hot swap controller from Analog Devices' Simple Swapper™ series, designed to manage inrush current and protect downstream circuitry during board insertion into a live -48V backplane. It operates over a -100V to -9V supply range, drawing only 500 µA of quiescent current, and integrates a fault timeout and thermal limit to handle sustained overcurrent or short-circuit events without external timing components.
UVLO programmability and protection envelope
The undervoltage lockout (UVLO) threshold is programmable via external resistors, allowing the designer to set the minimum input voltage at which the external N-channel FET turns on — critical for preventing partial conduction during a sagging -48V rail. The controller does not integrate an internal switch; it drives an external N-channel MOSFET, so the current rating and Rds(on) of the pass element are chosen by the designer to match the load.
Package and board-fit for -48V designs
Housed in a 6-lead SOT-23 package (SOT-23-6, supplier device package SOT-6), the controller occupies minimal PCB area — a key advantage when fitting multiple hot-swap channels on a crowded line card.
Lifecycle and compliance for procurement
Fully RoHS3 compliant, the part meets the current EU restriction directive for lead and other hazardous substances, simplifying compliance for products destined for European markets.
