12-bit multiplying DAC in a through-hole DIP
The Maxim Integrated MAX543BCPA+ is a 12-bit multiplying digital-to-analog converter built around an R-2R ladder architecture. It delivers a current output (unbuffered) and connects to a host controller via an SPI data interface. The 1 µs settling time and ±1 LSB max INL/DNL make it suited for calibration sources, programmable gain stages, and low-frequency waveform generation where monotonic 12-bit performance is the requirement.
Supply rails and reference — two supplies, one external reference
The DAC uses dual supply rails: the digital interface takes 5 V, while the analog supply accepts 5 V or 11.4 V to 15.75 V. The reference is external.
Package and temperature grade — prototype-friendly, indoor only
Housed in an 8-pin PDIP through-hole package (0.300" width, 7.62 mm pitch), this DAC is breadboard-friendly and easy to hand-solder for prototypes or low-volume production. The operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C, which limits it to commercial/indoor environments — not rated for industrial enclosures, outdoor telecom cabinets, or under-hood automotive use.
Active lifecycle — no end-of-life concern
The MAX543BCPA+ carries an Active product status per the manufacturer. There is no NRND or last-time-buy notice in effect.
