16-bit precision DAC for embedded control loops
The MAX541BCSA+ is a 16-bit, voltage-output digital-to-analog converter from Analog Devices, built on an R-2R ladder architecture. It delivers a monotonic transfer function with ±0.5 LSB INL and ±0.5 LSB DNL, which means the output stays within one-half LSB of the ideal value across all codes — no missing codes, no non-monotonic steps that could trip a closed-loop controller. With a typical settling time of 1 µs to 0.5 LSB, this DAC can update the analog output at rates exceeding 500 kHz, making it suitable for fast servo loops, waveform generation, and automated test equipment where the control voltage must track a digital setpoint with minimal delay.
SPI interface and single-supply operation
The digital interface is a standard 3-wire SPI, compatible with most microcontrollers and DSPs. The DAC accepts a 16-bit data word and updates the output on the rising edge of the chip-select signal — no external latch or parallel bus needed. The unbuffered voltage output delivers a 0 V to VREF swing, with the reference voltage supplied externally (up to the supply rail).
