Eight channels, one DIP — what the MAX521BCPP+ brings to the board
The Maxim Integrated MAX521BCPP+ is an 8-bit, 8-channel voltage-output DAC in a 20-pin 0.300" PDIP package. It uses an R-2R ladder architecture with an external voltage reference and communicates over an I²C bus, delivering a typical settling time of 6 µs per channel. The eight independent buffered outputs make it a natural fit for multi-loop set-point control in lab instrumentation, industrial calibrators, and PCB-level trim/pot replacement where you need to set and hold eight analog voltages from a single microcontroller port.
I²C bus and external reference — the interface story
The I²C data interface keeps the pin count low — only two wires for all eight channels — but the part requires an external reference voltage. That external ref gives you flexibility: you can set the output span independent of the 5 V analog and digital supply rails. If your system already carries a precision reference, the MAX521BCPP+ slots right in.
Through-hole package and temperature range
Housed in a 20-PDIP with 0.300" body width, this is a through-hole part — breadboard-friendly, socketable, and reworkable. The operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C covers commercial and most lab environments, but not extended industrial or automotive under-hood conditions.
