14-bit DAC with SPI – what it is
The MAX5173AEEE+ is a single-channel, 14-bit voltage-output DAC from Analog Devices. It uses an R-2R ladder architecture with a buffered output, so it can drive a moderate load directly without an external op-amp. The SPI data interface keeps the pin count low — only three wires (SCLK, DIN, CS) to the host controller.
Settling time and update rate
Typical settling time is 12 µs to 1 LSB for a full-scale step. That limits the per-channel update rate — fine for trimming power supplies, setting bias points, or slow closed-loop control.
Supply rails and reference
The output span is set by the reference voltage you supply; the DAC gain is 2×, so the full-scale output is twice the reference. The external reference adds a BOM component but gives flexibility to match the ADC or sensor range.
Package and temperature grade
