The MAX5090AATE+ is a step-down (buck) switching regulator from Analog Devices, delivering a fixed 3.3V output at up to 2A from a 6.5V to 76V input rail. The wide 76V maximum input covers 48V telecom buses, 24V industrial supplies, and 12V automotive systems with headroom for transients — no external clamp needed for load-dump events up to the rated ceiling.
127 kHz switching frequency and the no-synchronous-rectifier trade-off
Switching at 127 kHz, the part uses a lower frequency than modern high-density converters — the external inductor and output capacitor are physically larger, but switching losses in the internal FET are lower, which matters for thermal management in the 16-TQFN (5x5 mm) exposed-pad package. The absence of a synchronous rectifier means the freewheeling diode is external — a Schottky with a forward voltage below 0.5V at 2A keeps efficiency in the 80-85% range typical for this topology, but the diode's reverse leakage at high temperature adds to the quiescent draw.
