Input range and output — the BOM-fit decision
The MAX5033BASA+T is a 500 mA step-down (buck) regulator with a fixed 5 V output, accepting an input from 7.5 V to 76 V. That 76 V ceiling covers 48 V telecom rails, 24 V industrial buses, and 12 V automotive systems with headroom for load-dump transients — no external pre-regulator needed.
Switching frequency and inductor sizing
The 125 kHz switching frequency is on the low side for a modern buck — expect a physically larger inductor (typically 47–100 µH) compared to a 500 kHz+ part, but the trade-off is lower switching losses and a cleaner EMI spectrum in conducted emissions. No synchronous rectifier means the external Schottky diode carries the catch current; budget its forward drop into the efficiency calculation at full load.
The 8-SOIC package (3.90 mm width) dissipates through the copper pad on the PCB — a 2-layer board with adequate via stitching under the package keeps the junction within limits at 500 mA continuous.
