High-voltage LDO with watchdog and protection suite
The MAX5023LASA+T is a 5V fixed-output LDO from Analog Devices, rated for 150mA continuous output from a 65V maximum input rail. It integrates a watchdog timer, reset output, and hold input alongside the usual enable pin, so it can supervise a microcontroller's health while powering it from a single regulator.
PSRR and quiescent current — the noise and standby trade-off
PSRR is 54 dB at 100 Hz — this is the ripple-rejection figure at the fundamental of a full-wave rectified mains supply. For a 12 V battery-fed system with a 100 Hz ripple component, the output ripple is attenuated by a factor of roughly 500, so a 100 mV input ripple becomes 0.2 mV at the output. Quiescent current is 140 µA typical — low enough for an always-on rail in a vehicle body controller or an industrial sensor node that stays powered during ignition-off periods, but not in the sub-10 µA range needed for coin-cell battery life.
Dropout headroom and protection for a 12 V / 24 V system
Maximum dropout voltage is 1.5 V at 150 mA load. For a 5 V output, the input must stay above 6.5 V across the full load range to maintain regulation — a 12 V nominal battery that dips to 8 V during cranking still holds margin. Built-in protection covers over-temperature shutdown, reverse polarity on the input, and output short-circuit current limiting. These are the three failure modes that kill an unprotected LDO in an automotive or industrial power rail — the part survives a miswired battery or a dead short on the output without external clamp diodes.
