Product details

RS-422/RS-485 full-duplex transceiver in a 14-pin DIP

The Maxim Integrated MAX491CPD+ is a single-channel RS-422/RS-485 transceiver that handles full-duplex communication over a single twisted pair or two pairs. It integrates one driver and one receiver in a 14-pin DIP through-hole package, making it a direct fit for socketed or breadboarded designs, legacy bus interfaces, and point-to-point or multi-drop serial links where the bus runs at up to 2.5 Mbps.

Full duplex — one pair for transmit, one for receive

Full-duplex operation means the driver and receiver are active simultaneously, so the MAX491CPD+ needs two twisted pairs: one for transmit and one for receive. This contrasts with half-duplex RS-485 transceivers that share a single pair and require direction control via a DE/RE pin.

Package and mounting

The 14-pin DIP (0.300" body width) is a through-hole package that fits standard pitch sockets or can be soldered directly into plated through-holes. The supplier device package is 14-PDIP.

Lifecycle and sourcing

It is ROHS3 compliant.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MAX491 and MAX491CPD+?

The MAX491CPD+ is the lead-free / ROHS3-compliant version of the original MAX491. The electrical specifications — full-duplex RS-422/RS-485 transceiver, 2.5 Mbps data rate, 5 V supply, 0°C to 70°C range, 14-pin DIP package — are identical between the two. The MAX491CPD+ can be used as a direct replacement for the MAX491 in existing designs.

Is MAX491CPD+ compatible with 3.3V logic?

No. The MAX491CPD+ requires a 4.75 V to 5.25 V supply and its logic inputs are referenced to that 5 V rail. It is not rated for 3.3 V logic levels. For 3.3 V RS-485 transceivers, look at parts like the MAX3485 family.
