Current feedback architecture for high-speed signal chains
The MAX4224ESA+ is a current feedback (CFB) operational amplifier from Analog Devices, built for applications where wide bandwidth and fast settling matter more than DC precision. The CFB topology decouples gain-bandwidth from the closed-loop gain setting, so the 600 MHz -3dB bandwidth holds across a range of gain configurations — useful in video distribution, ADC drivers, and IF/RF buffer stages where the signal frequency is fixed and the gain is set by external resistors. Slew rate is 1700 V/µs, which means the output can swing 5 V in about 3 ns. This is the limiting factor for large-signal pulse fidelity — a 10 MHz, 10 Vpp sine wave requires about 314 V/µs, so this part has margin for even faster edges. The 6 mA supply current is modest for this speed class, reflecting the CFB architecture's inherently lower quiescent draw per unit bandwidth compared to voltage-feedback designs at the same slew rate.
Supply span runs from 5.7 V minimum to 11 V maximum. This is a single-supply or split-supply part — the 5.7 V floor means it operates from a standard 6 V rail or a 5 V rail with a boost converter, but not from a bare 5 V supply. The 11 V ceiling limits it to ±5.5 V split supplies, which is typical for high-speed analog front-ends running from ±5 V rails.
