What this buffer is and where it goes
The Maxim MAX4178EUK+ is a single-channel current-feedback buffer configured as a gain-of-+1 closed-loop buffer. The 100 mA output per channel can drive a 50 Ω or 75 Ω line directly. It runs on a single supply up to 12 V and draws 8 mA quiescent.
Package and field-service reality
It comes in a SOT-23-5 (SC-74A) surface-mount package. That is small enough to fit tight layouts but still hand-solderable with a fine-tip iron — no hot-air station required if you are careful. The pin-1 mark is clear, so orientation is obvious even under a magnifier. No lab bench needed for a swap; a field tech with tweezers, flux, and a soldering iron can replace it on site if the board has accessible pads. MSL 1 out of the bag, so no bake cycle before reflow unless the reel has been open past the floor-life window.
Lifecycle and sourcing posture
It is ROHS3 compliant. No single-source risk here; the part is widely stocked across the channel.
