RS-232 transceiver for 3V/5V mixed-voltage designs
The MAX3386EEUP+ from Maxim (now Analog Devices) is a full-duplex RS-232 transceiver packing three drivers and two receivers in a 20-TSSOP package. It handles 250kbps data rate across a 3V to 5.5V supply range, so it bridges 3.3V controllers and legacy 5V serial peripherals without a level shifter. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis cleans up noisy cable runs typical in industrial environments. Rated for -40°C to 85°C, it fits outdoor telecom cabinets, factory-floor terminals, and any RS-232 port that needs to survive a cold start.
Supply flexibility and noise margin
The 3V to 5.5V supply range means this part runs on a 3.3V rail without a separate 5V supply, simplifying the power tree. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis is generous — standard RS-232 receivers often spec 200–300 mV — so it rejects ground shifts and crosstalk on longer cables. If your BOM already has a 3.3V rail, you skip a regulator.
Active lifecycle — no LTB pressure
ROHS3 compliant. That makes it a safe choice for new designs and production builds without worrying about a sudden EOL notice.
Package and footprint
Housed in a 20-TSSOP (4.40 mm width) with surface-mount leads. The supplier device package is also 20-TSSOP, so no footprint ambiguity. Standard MSL handling applies — no special bake requirements beyond the usual floor-life rules for TSSOP.
