What this level translator does
The MAX3378EEBC+T is a single-chip, bidirectional voltage-level translator from Analog Devices. It handles four independent channels, each capable of translating logic signals between two supply domains: VCCA from 1.2 V to 5.5 V and VCCB from 1.65 V to 5.5 V. The open-drain, tri-state outputs make it a natural fit for I²C, SMBus, or any multi-drop bus where multiple drivers share a line. With a rated data rate of 16 Mbps, it keeps up with most serial interfaces short of full-speed USB.
Supply voltage ranges and what they mean for your BOM
VCCA accepts 1.2 V to 5.5 V; VCCB accepts 1.65 V to 5.5 V. That covers the common low-voltage cores (1.2 V, 1.8 V) and the legacy 3.3 V or 5 V peripheral rails. The translator does not require a direction pin — it senses the direction automatically, which saves a GPIO on the controller side. The 4-channel count in a single 12-UCSP package keeps the board footprint small, though the 0.5 mm pitch BGA demands careful PCB layout and a stencil designed for that ball diameter.
Protection and temperature grade
On-chip power-supply decoupling and thermal-shutdown protection reduce the need for external components. The -40°C to 85°C operating range covers industrial control, outdoor telecom, and automotive cabin environments. No AEC-Q grade is listed, so for under-hood automotive use you would want to check the part against the module's own qualification plan.
Lifecycle and sourcing reality
The MAX3378EEBC+T carries an Active lifecycle status and is ROHS3 compliant.
