RS232 transceiver for low-voltage serial links
The Maxim Integrated MAX3316CAE+ is a full-duplex RS232 transceiver packing two drivers and two receivers into a 16-SSOP package. It handles data rates up to 460Kbps, which covers most legacy serial ports and many industrial terminal interfaces. The supply range of 2.25V to 3V means this part runs off a 2.5V or 3V rail directly — no extra regulator needed if your board already carries one of those. Receiver hysteresis of 300 mV gives clean signal recovery on noisy lines, a common headache on long cable runs inside a cabinet or between panels.
Where it fits on the board
Surface-mount 16-SSOP body (5.30 mm width) is a standard footprint that matches many existing RS232 transceiver layouts. The 0°C to 70°C temperature grade limits this part to commercial environments — office equipment, test gear, indoor telecom racks. Not rated for the engine bay or an unheated enclosure in winter. If your BOM calls for a wider temperature swing, you would need the industrial-grade sibling in the same family.
Sourcing and lifecycle
The MAX3316CAE+ carries an Active lifecycle status with ROHS3 compliance. Current pricing and lead time confirmed at quote time.
