Product details

RS-232 transceiver in 28-SSOP — rework bench notes

The MAX3243CAI+T is a full-duplex RS-232 transceiver packing three drivers and five receivers into a 28-SSOP package with 0.209-inch body width and 5.30 mm height. The 1.27 mm pitch gives you room to route a trace between pads on a two-layer board — no micro-via needed. Data rate is 120 kbps, which covers legacy serial ports and industrial equipment handshaking lines. Receiver hysteresis is 300 mV, giving noise immunity on long cable runs where ground potential shifts between equipment enclosures.

SSOP rework — will it survive the hot air?

The 28-SSOP package is one of the friendlier surface-mount forms to rework. The 1.27 mm pitch lets you drag-solder with a chisel tip, and the gull-wing leads are visible under a loupe for inspection. No hidden bumps, no underfill — just flux, hot air, and a steady hand. Preheat the board to 100°C before hitting the part with hot air — the SSOP body is thin and the leads are short, so thermal shock can crack the mould compound if you go straight to reflow temperature. A low-velocity nozzle at 300°C lifts the part clean without lifting the pads. Pin 1 is clearly marked with a dot on the top surface and a chamfer on the moulding — no guessing which end is which under the microscope. Orientation is unambiguous even after the part is removed and the pads are tinned.
