Receiver hysteresis is specified at 500 mV — this filters noise on long cable runs or in electrically noisy enclosures where ground shifts can corrupt single-ended RS-232 signals. The hysteresis threshold means a 500 mV dead band around the switching point, reducing false edges from coupled transients.
