Quad receiver for RS422/RS485 — no driver on die
The MAX3096ESE+ is a quad RS422/RS485 line receiver from Maxim Integrated (now Analog Devices), designed to convert differential bus signals to single-ended logic levels on the 3V to 3.6V supply rail. It packs four independent receivers in a 16-SOIC package, with a 45 mV hysteresis comparator per channel to reject noise on twisted-pair or backplane buses. The 10 Mbps data rate supports Profibus, Modbus RTU, and other industrial fieldbus links running at standard baud rates with margin.
10 Mbps and 45 mV hysteresis — what they mean on a noisy bus
At 10 Mbps the receiver handles the full Profibus-DP data rate (12 Mbps is the next step) and leaves headroom for cable-length derating. The 45 mV hysteresis is the key spec for industrial environments: it prevents the output from chattering when the differential input sits near the threshold on a long unterminated stub or in the presence of common-mode noise from nearby motor drives. Without that hysteresis you risk false start bits on a UART.
Active lifecycle — no last-time-buy risk for this BOM line
The MAX3096ESE+ carries an Active lifecycle status. The ROHS3 compliance covers the current European and global substance restrictions without an exemption expiry.
Industrial temperature grade and supply range
Rated for -40°C to +85°C operation, this receiver fits factory-floor cabinets, outdoor telecom shelters, and vehicle-mounted controllers where the ambient can climb above commercial limits. The 3V to 3.6V supply range aligns with common 3.3V FPGA and MCU I/O banks, eliminating the need for a separate level translator on the receiver output side.
Surface-mount 16-SOIC — footprint and handling
The part comes in a 16-SOIC (0.154", 3.90 mm width) body, a standard JEDEC outline that fits a wide range of PCB footprints. The Tube shipping medium is typical for small-lot prototyping and low-volume production; for higher volumes the same die is available in Tape & Reel under alternate order codes.
