What this RS-485 transceiver does on the bus
The MAX3089CPD+: It pushes data at 10 Mbps, which is fast enough for most industrial fieldbus links and multi-drop sensor arrays. It runs on a 4.75 V to 5.25 V supply rail. The receiver hysteresis is 100 mV, which gives decent noise immunity on a typical factory-floor twisted pair.
Temperature grade and where it fits
It belongs in a climate-controlled cabinet, not an outdoor junction box or an engine bay. If your application sees 0°C to 70°C ambient, this fits. The 14-DIP (0.300-inch) through-hole package is a breadboard-friendly footprint — easy to hand-solder, easy to socket for prototyping. For production, the 14-PDIP is still widely used in legacy control panels and retrofit designs where SMT reflow is not an option.
