RS-232 transceiver for 5 V serial ports
The Maxim Integrated MAX211CAI+ is a full-duplex RS-232 transceiver in a 28-SSOP package, carrying four drivers and five receivers. It operates from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply and handles data rates up to 120 kbps. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis provides noise margin on longer cable runs. This is a commercial-temperature (0°C to 70°C) part, suited for desktop peripherals, point-of-sale terminals, and serial-port adapters where the environment stays indoors and temperature-controlled.
Package and storage
The 28-SSOP body (0.209" wide, 5.30 mm) is a fine-pitch surface-mount package. It ships in tube form, which is convenient for hand-assembly or low-volume rework but less efficient for automated pick-and-place lines that prefer tape-and-reel. Store the reels dry if you later transfer to tape; the SSOP body is moisture-sensitive and needs a dry-bake cycle if the moisture-barrier bag is compromised.
