Multiphase step-down controller with PMBus
The MAX20754ETMA1+ is a multiphase step-down (buck) DC-DC controller from Analog Devices, delivering a PWM output with up to 6 interleaved phases. It accepts a supply voltage of 4.5 V to 16 V and switches at a programmable frequency between 300 kHz and 800 kHz. The controller integrates a PMBus serial interface for telemetry and configuration, and provides two regulated outputs with positive polarity. No synchronous rectifier is built in — the external MOSFETs handle the rectification.
Phase count and switching frequency trade-offs
Six output phases spread the inductor current ripple and reduce per-phase component stress — useful for high-current rails where a single-phase controller would require bulky magnetics or risk thermal imbalance. The 300–800 kHz switching window lets the designer balance efficiency against output filter size: lower frequencies cut switching losses, higher frequencies shrink the inductors. Operating temperature spans -40°C to 125°C junction, covering industrial and telecom enclosures where ambient air may exceed 85°C.
RoHS3 compliance is confirmed, with no lead, mercury, cadmium, or other restricted substances above the threshold.
