12-bit SAR ADC in a through-hole DIP — what it is and where it fits
The MAX191BCNG+ is a 12-bit SAR ADC with a single pseudo-differential input channel, sampling at 100k samples per second. It integrates an internal voltage reference and communicates over SPI or parallel data bus. The through-hole 24-pin DIP package (0.300" body width) makes this ADC a natural fit for socketed prototype boards, MRO replacement in existing equipment, or designs where vibration resistance isn't the primary concern. Operating temperature is rated 0°C to 70°C, so it belongs in controlled indoor environments — lab instrumentation, benchtop test gear, industrial control cabinets with climate management, or commercial data-acquisition front ends.
Supply rails and signal chain planning
The analog section runs on ±5V bipolar supplies or a single 5V rail, while the digital interface requires a separate 5V supply. That dual-supply architecture means your board needs a clean ±5V analog rail — a switching supply followed by a low-noise LDO or a post-regulator filter stage. The pseudo-differential input accepts a signal referenced to a common-mode point, which helps reject ground noise between the sensor and the ADC when the source is remote.
Lifecycle and sourcing — still an active line
The MAX191BCNG+ carries an Active product status with ROHS3 compliance. The through-hole DIP package is a mature, non-moisture-sensitive format; store the tubes in a standard ESD-safe cabinet, no dry-bake required before reflow (though reflow doesn't apply here — hand-solder or wave-solder only).
